Flowers only have a small window of blooming, and they can require deadheading, staking, and fussing. So when you find a plant that can bring vibrant color into the garden without flowers, it’s time to start planting! Be careful, though. Once you add one to your garden, you’ll end up planting a new variety in every color.

Coral bells (aka heuchera) are a beautiful shade-friendly perennial plant. They come in so many colors and have beautiful ruffled evergreen foliage. It comes in a wide variety of colors, including cinnamon caramel, dark plum, bright chartreuse, and frosted silver (to name a few).

If you have a hosta with dark and light green leaves, such as ‘Guacamole’, placing it near a bright green key lime pie heuchera will make it shine. I also like using this variety in containers. It’s very reliable and practically maintenance-free. It flowers dainty pink flowers in the summer.
